Emergency Exit Device Inspection Checklist (UK-focused, globally applicable) , Use this practical checklist to keep EN 1125 panic exit devices (public access) and EN 179 emergency exit devices (trained-only) working safely, relatching reliably, and ready for audit. Copy the template below for your site log, and file it with door certificates and datasheets. Get the latest PDF and request guidance.
How to use
Who: Site managers, facilities teams, competent contractors.
When: At planned intervals (e.g., monthly) and after works/events.
Scope: Devices, strikes/keepers, fixings, signage, closer interaction, and documentation.
Safety: If an exit fails any step, mark the door OUT OF SERVICE and rectify before reopening.

A) Operation & relatching
Door opens with a single intuitive action appropriate to its standard:
EN 1125 = full-width touch bar.
EN 179 = push pad or lever for trained staff.
From the required opening angle, release the hardware: the door relatches positively without drag or delay.
With the closer fitted, the door returns and latches consistently 3× in a row.
B) Strikes & keepers (alignment)
Verify engagement line and latch/bolt throw.
Vertical-rod: top keeper clearance OK; floor strike seated/recessed (or surface strike where recessing is impractical).
Centre mullion (if used): keeper seating sound; no rattle.
Shim/pack if needed; tighten progressively.
C) Fixings & condition
Device body, rods, trims and keepers: secure and free from damage.
No sharp edges, missing end caps or loose covers.
No fouling by weather-seals, plates or security bars.
D) Signage & access
Compliant exit signage present and visible from approach.
Route and swing path unobstructed (no displays, bins, pallets).
E) Re-entry trims & cylinders (if fitted)
Outside trim operates the device correctly.
Cylinder length/profile suits door build-up; keys operate smoothly.
Where policy requires, key control documented (KA/MK as applicable).
F) Fire-door notes (where applicable)
Approvals match the door certificate across device + strikes/keepers + fixings.
Intumescent/seals intact; closer interaction correct.
Record part numbers where available.
G) Policy items
Dogging (hold-open) is NON-FIRE DOORS ONLY, under written policy; lockable cover in high-risk areas.
Any deviations or restrictions signed off by the responsible person.

Slow return / jamming: usually keeper misalignment or over-tightened fixings—re-set the engagement line and re-test with the closer.
Rattle on pairs: verify both top/bottom latching (vertical-rod) or mullion keepers (paired rim).
Key control issues: confirm cylinder length/profile; review KA/MK records.
Damage / vandalism risk: fit lockable dogging covers (non-fire doors only).

Q1: How often should I inspect?
Follow your risk assessment; monthly is common, plus checks after works/events.
Q2: What if a door fails any step?
Mark OUT OF SERVICE, fix immediately, and record the action before reopening.
Q3: Do trims/cylinders affect compliance?
Yes—on fire doors, trim, cylinder, strikes/keepers and fixings must match the door certificate.
Q4: Floor strike or surface strike?
Prefer recessed floor strikes where thresholds permit; otherwise use surface strikes rated for your floor and traffic.
Q5: Can I hold doors open during deliveries?
Use dogging only on non-fire doors under a written policy; release straight after use.
